TBILISI, DFWatch–The Prosecutor’s Office in Georgia has asked the court to set a 50,000 lari (USD 30,000) bail for former Tbilisi mayor Gigi Ugulava in a case involving embezzlement of money from parking fees.

The office on Tuesday also asked Tbilisi City Court to confiscate his passport and identity card.

Ugulava’s lawyer Beka Basilaia wants his client free without bail until the trial. He told journalists on Tuesday that they have been given evidence about the charges of his client and he claims that none of the documents prove that Ugulava is guilty.

Basilaia says the first charges against Ugulava were introduced a year and a half ago and since then he has crossed the border 20 times and is now in Georgia. His client has been in court 50 times so it is excluded that he might hide or not show up in court.

Justice Minister Thea Tsulukiani said on Tuesday there is not a plan to summon Ugulava for questioning again, before the second round of the local election in mid July.

Ugulava is charged with embezzlement of more than one million lari while he was mayor. https://dfwatch.net/tbilisis-ex-mayor-accused-of-embezzlement-involving-parking-tickets-84791

On Wednesday, the court will decide what terms will apply until his trial.
