TBILISI, DFWatch–Tbilisi City Court on Monday rejected a motion by the Prosecutor’s Office to change the USD 30,000 bail set for former Tbilisi Mayor Gigi Ugulava into pre-trial detention.

The judge said that the arguments in the motion were not strong enough to prove that it is necessary to change the bail into detention.

Ugulava is already in detention on other charges.

The next hearing in the case will be on July 18.

The Prosecutor’s Office claimed that Gigi Ugulava violated his bail conditions, and therefore the house of his mother-in-law, which he put up as security for the 30,000 bail money, must be taken over by the state.

Ugulava is charged with embezzlement. He was detained at Tbilisi airport as he was about to leave the country on July 3, and a court placed him in pre-trial detention the next day.
