TBILIISI, DFWatch–Unknown people Friday night attempted to break into two election precincts in Nadzaladevi, a district in Tbilisi. Police detained them before they managed to break in.

The precincts were not damaged. The reason for the break-in attempt is not yet known, but the Interior Ministry says an investigation has been launched and information will be made available.

Georgia goes to the polls on Sunday, October 27. Election precincts are ready and must be sealed Saturday evening. The seal will be opened on Sunday morning.

Nino Giorgobiani, spokesperson for the ministry, said that police reacted quickly and detained the suspects. Nothing was done to the precincts.

The chairman of the election commission in Nadzaladevi district doesn’t know who the perpetrators are or why they attempted to break into the school. There is no official explanation so far about possible motives.

Giorgi Chulukhidze, from the non-governmental organization People, Law, Freedom, says about 20 socially vulnerable people wanted to break into this building and broke the windows of the school. He says these people later said they didn’t know there were election precincts in the building.
