TBILISI, DFWatch–There were 1,703 fires in Georgia in the first half of 2014. 38 people died and 61 were injured, according to the Interior Ministry.

In 1,005 of the cases, the reason for the fire could not be determined. In 333 cases, the cause was negligence, while in 149 cases it was improper use of electrical equipment. 327 buildings were destroyed by fire.

In the same period last year there were 1,585 fires, which resulted in 28 deaths and 48 injured. In 950 cases, the reason for the fire could not be determined. 263 buildings were destroyed by fire last year.

The highest number of fires this year – 300 – took place in the Imereti region, while there were 295 in Kakheti and 270 in Tbilisi.

According to the ministry, in 2010 there were 4,330 fires; in 2011 3,323; and in the same six month period of 2012 there were 2,034 fires.
