TBILISI, DFWatch – Commemoration events will be held during a whole week in Georgia to pay tribute to victims of Russian-Georgian war in 2008.

370 people died as a result of the five-day war. 190 of them were civilians, 169 soldiers and 14 policemen, three journalists – two Georgians and one from the Netherlands.

President Mikheil Saakashvili and Patriarch Ilia II lay down flowers on the graves of the war dead at Mukhatgverdi’s cemetery. 43 soldiers killed during combat operations are buried at the cemetery, several of them could not be identified.

The Movement For Fair Georgia and the Federation of War Veterans also paid tribute to the memory of the victims at Mukhatgverdi’s Cemetery.

The leaders of the National Democratic Party and its youth activists held a demonstration on Rustaveli Street in the center of Tbilisi, giving away informational flyers to passers-by.

Soldiers were also commemorated in Shindisi, a village in the Gori region. According to Interpressnews, 17 soldiers confronted Russian troops in the village four years ago. They refused to give up and fought until 15 of them had died. Two Georgian soldiers decided not to be taken prisoner and blew themselves up.

The local government of Kakheti, the region in East Georgia, has already visited several families of the soldiers and citizens, died in the war. These families were given one-time compensation over 500_1000 GEL.

There is planned to show a movie about the war, the photos of dead soldiers and organize an exhibition of the young artist’s paintings in Kakheti this week.
